Painshill Park - Hermitage
About This Bridgerton Filming Location
The rustic Hermitage at Painshill Park provided an authentic woodland retreat setting for Bridgerton's more intimate outdoor scenes, embodying the 18th-century romantic ideal of communion with nature. Built around 1752 as one of Painshill's earliest follies, the Hermitage was designed to resemble a tree house when viewed from the front, cleverly elevated above the sloping woodland floor. The structure features a traditional thatched roof and is divided into a living room and bedroom, reflecting the period fashion for hermitages where wealthy landowners would sometimes employ hermits to enhance the romantic atmosphere of their gardens. The original Hermitage had fallen into disrepair and was chopped up for firewood, but the current structure was rebuilt using timber cleared from the estate itself. Surrounded by mature woodland, the Hermitage offered Bridgerton's characters a secluded spot for private conversations away from the social formalities of Regency society. Its appearance in the series highlighted the contrast between public social spaces and intimate natural retreats.
